Yellowfin Tuna. One of my favorite fish in the world. Growing up in New Jersey August meant the start of Yellowfin season and we would target them 80 miles offshore in the Canyons.
In South Florida there are a few weeks where anglers have the chance of catching one. The problem is that it is not very predictable and they are very hit or miss. Most of the time the fish are larger as well and in Florida we fish pretty light tackle for the sailfish so when a big tuna comes along and grabs your kite bait he’s got the advantage.
In the 2016 season we hooked two fish that we fought for over an hour that I am sure were tuna that we lost. This piece is a nod to those bruiser fish. As upset as we were to lose them, I am happy to have hooked into them down here. Hope to have another chance one day soon. Until then I hope they fatten up on flyers!
